Every third Wednesday of the month at the Artist SPEAKeasy, Spacetaker hosts two to three artists from varying disciplines (visual, performing, literary, etc.) to present, in an informal atmosphere, creative dialogs/talks/presentations about their work followed by a question and answer session where the audience can glean further insight into the artist, the artist's aesthetic and creative process. The evening is designed not only to bring together artists and those who appreciate the arts, but also to introduce local artists to each other to encourage conversation and cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists and their chosen media.
Drinks and nosh are served at 6:30; formal talks are underway at 7:00. Guests are invited to come and go as necessary.
This month's SPEAKeasy features jack-of-all musician Geoffrey Muller, composer/musician Elliot Cooper Cole, and filmmaker Stephanie St. Sanchez.
About Elliot Cole:
Elliot Cooper Cole takes the omnivore's approach: he has sung in pop groups and musical theater, written string quartets, produced two hip-hoperas, played bass and piano in jazz combos, and written music software. A graduate of the Shepherd School of Music, Elliot's interests in strict counterpoint and 19th century pedagogy also led him to study at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. He currently lives in Houston, where he writes, builds web sites, and organizes small adventure-concerts.
In his words: "This summer I wrote a score for John Harvey's play Night of the Giant, which Mildred's Umbrella staged this fall. I'm in the middle of mixing and mastering a new hip-hop opera, The Rakes Progress, with the bassoonist and rapper Brad Balliett. I'm also writing a chamber-pop song cycle called Babinigar, based on an Afghani folk story of the same name, for a living-room band I'm in. Next up, an exciting commission from the -- let's see if I get this right -- the Ensemble of the Academy of Carnegie Hall/Juilliard/Weill Institute, which will be premiered at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC this February."
