HOUSTON MET DANCE PRESENTS STILL CONFRONTING THE GROUND

January 21-24, 2010 at Barnevelder

Houston, Texas – January 13, 2010 – Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, in collaboration with choreographer jhon r. stronks revisits his 2009 work, Not Yet Soaring, to develop a new full-length evening performance, Still Confronting the Ground, an evening in honor of growing up and what it takes to get there. The dance theater work featuring live sound design by Jeremiah DiMatteo will be presented at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex at 2201 Preston, Houston, 77002 on January 21-23, 2010 at 7:30 PM; and January 24 at 6 PM.   Tickets for the evening are available on-line at www.barnevelder.org for $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  For performance information visit www.houstonmetdance.org.

Not Yet Soaring premiered at Mixing it Up in spring 2009.  The company embraced the exuberant work and movement in the piece and encouraged stronks to further develop his concept.  stronks takes his new piece beyond the framework of Not Yet Soaring to create an evening in which stronks “blends the magic of concert dance with the emotional vulnerability of performance art.” Still Confronting the Ground is a dance theater work that explores stronks personal emphasis on healing, happiness and the honesty of loving action.  He is devoted to developing movement-based work that is clear, compassionate and above all else loving in nature.  Clair Hummel, a graduate student at the University of Houston Theatre, Dance, Costume Design and Technology department has created costumes for this piece; Kris Phelps serves as Houston Metropolitan Dance Company lighting designer.

Founded in 1995, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company familiarly know as Houston Met Dance, embraces a comprehensive dance style that fuses the dance idioms of contemporary dance, jazz, tap and ballet.  The company is committed to commissioning new works by internationally renowned and emerging choreographers as well as nurturing the creative talent within the company.
