Orange Show Announces Artwork Contest for 2014 Houston Art Car Parade
Organization seeks Houston artists to submit creative designs for the parade’s 27th year, gives cash prizes

HOUSTON (December 16, 2013) - Celebrating the 27th Annual Houston Art Car Parade, scheduled for May 10, 2014, the event’s producer the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, is tapping into the creative juices of Houston’s visual arts community and opening up a call for submissions for the official artwork for this year’s parade. A panel of prominent arts leaders will choose one artist who will receive a $1200 honorarium and whose submission will be the official emblem of the 2014 parade, represented on all Houston Art Car Parade merchandise, advertisements, banners, posters and its website www.thehoustonartcarparade.com.

In addition, three artists will be chosen via an online public vote through the Orange Show’s Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/theorangeshow and www.facebook.com/houstonartcarparade) to receive a $200 honorarium, and their artwork will be printed on a limited run of t-shirts to be sold online and during the parade weekend festivities.

The contest is open only to artists residing within the greater Houston area. Submissions will be accepted from Monday December 16, 2013 through Friday January 10, 2014.

Artists may enter up to three different submissions by emailing a .jpg or .pdf to contest@orangeshow.org, making sure to include their name, email address, physical address and phone number.

Included below are guidelines for the submissions as well as a list of dates and deadlines. Contest is generously sponsored by Free Press Houston.

Guidelines:

  • Artists must reside within in the greater Houston area to submit.
  • Artwork should represent the unique, whimsical aspects of the Houston Art Car Parade and appeal to all ages and demographics. For inspiration take a look at www.thehoustonartcarparade.com for pictures of previous parades, and at www.orangeshow.org for pictures of other Orange Show events.
  • FAMILY FRIENDLY – the Houston Art Car Parade is a family event.
  • It is not necessary to include actual text, dates, locations, etc. within the artwork itself. The winning artist will work with the Orange Show’s graphic designer to develop the suite of materials.
  • ALL ARTWORK MUST BE ORIGINAL. Submissions utilizing photographs (manipulated or not) of vehicles, places, people, or things that are not credited to the submitting artist will not be accepted.
  • The artwork will be seen by over 300,000 people on parade day, as well as millions around the world who will see photos or visit the event website. The art needs to be easy to understand, relatable and fun.
