Or, why does Spacetaker not look right on my computer?
Unlike many sites, Spacetaker was built using only standards-based web development techniques, and works beautifully in any modern browser -- Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Omniweb, Safari, etc. There are lots of good reasons to adopt this kind of development plan, including ease of maintenance, accessibility, and even speed of page loads. Spacetaker does, however, require a modern browser, and that you have both cookies and Javascript enabled for our main pages (not all portions of the site require these things).
But what does all this mean for me?
This means that if you're using an older browser -- say, Internet Explorer before 6.0, or Netscape before 6.0 -- the site probably doesn't work quite right on your first visit. We're aware of this, and we're sorry. If you're on a platform where a newer browser will work (Windows since 98; Macs since OS X; almost any Linux), we strongly suggest you adopt one. The Mozilla Project offers both the Mozilla suite (which includes lots of other tools) as well as thevery popular Firefox browser.
Both are free of charge, and are available for a variety of platforms including Windows (98 or better), Macintosh (OS X), and Linux. If you're on a modern Mac, things are even better, since Apple's Safari browser is among the best available, though it does have a few quirks. For a variety of reasons, all of which are well documented elsewhere, we suggest you do NOT use Internet Explorer at all, though the site works fine if you do.
Hey! I can't run OS X! What should I do?
This leaves out, however, our friends who still run OS 9 on their Macs. We know you're out there, and we're sorry the browser world has kind of passed you by in the years since Apple's migration to OS X. For you, and for people who wish to use our site from other, nontraditional tools like Palms, phones, Blackberries, and even devices we haven't thought of yet, we created Spacetaker Lite. Lite is a calendar-only version of the site that uses a simpler layout, no Javascript, and no cookies. It's been tested and should work just fine in virtually any browser, even the notoriously buggy Netscape 4.7. Just set your bookmark for Spacetaker Lite, and visit that page instead when you don't have a modern browser to use.
