Max Neuhaus, a pioneer in the use of sound in contemporary art, coined the term “sound installation” to describe his practice based on the creation of unique sounds for specific locations. As opposed to the temporal experience of hearing a piece of music, his work uses sound as a continuous material to engage our perception of the physical space around us. Using the invisible medium of sound alone, Neuhaus alters the way we both see and experience the world. He has said, “We each (more...)

On paper, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) and Hedda Sterne (b. 1910) may look like an odd couple. He is known primarily as the witty cartoonist for The New Yorker, while she has received the greatest attention as a painter associated with the Abstract Expressionists. Yet, while they have produced seemingly disparate bodies of work, Sterne and Steinberg often similarly found inspiration in the city and country around them, as well as in one another. In 2001, Mark Fox felt burdened by the possessions that crowded his Cincinnati studio, sometimes wondering if he owned them or they owned him. Rather than sell, give, or toss them away, however, Fox embarked on what he describes as a “meditation on ownership.” Using black ink on white paper and allowing some white to show through to form the details, over the next two years, he drew each of his belongings at full size or larger. Then, he meticulously cut out each object and painted it (more...)

The melding of process, medium and ego with another in the act of collaboration doesn’t always result in the expected. But to hell with the results, the whole process in and of its self is a bit uncomfortable, unsettling. Why should one chose to participate in this self-infliction of agreed upon ego alliance? Yet an occasional unsettling, a little discomfort, can propel one to think a little different, be a little different. It allows for the unexpected, uncovers alternate slants, dislodge (more...)

The two Romanian-born artists met in New York City (more...)
